  2.     For the intermediate to advanced C programmer, a very useful text and 
  3.     reference to the language.  Many good example programs.  Explanations
  4.     very lucid.  Includes brief intro to C++.  Generic ANSI C, but most
  5.     examples in Turbo C.

  7. Bharath, Ramachandran and James Drosen: NEURAL NETWORK COMPUTING, Windcrest /

  9.     A good introduction to the hot topic of neural networks, what they are 
  10.     and how to use them to solve problems.  With C source code of the sample 
  11.     programs and a bibliography for further reading.

  14.     An excellent way to learn FORTH.  The book is easy to understand,
  15.     interesting, and amusing.

  18.     Still the best tutorial/reference on DOS for all you dinosaurs (bless
  19.     you!) who still prefer it to GUI abominations.

  23.     A treasure trove of code (C, C++, and Assembler) for making your PC stand 
  24.     on its hind legs and jump through hoops. Useful, educational, and 
  25.     entertaining, if a bit expensive. By now, you should be able to get it 
  26.     cheap(!) remaindered at a used book store or computer flea.  Must have!

  30.      A collection of articles from the LINUX JOURNAL, the premier newsletter 
  31.      for users of the Linux OS. Excellent intro to Linux. Recommended.

  35.      One of the best references / tutorials for UNIX system administrators 
  36.      and power users. Second edition has support for Linux. A must for anyone 
  37.      serious about UNIX / Linux.

  41.      A complete handbook / reference for using the ever more popular PGP 
  42.      encryption system developed by Phil Zimmerman. Very readable. Includes 
  43.      background material on encryption and its history. A logical companion 
  44.      book to Kahn's THE CODEBREAKERS ( see SCIENCE.LST file).

  48.     An excellent reference on the UNIX operating system, and a bargain at the 
  49.     price.

  51. Glossbrenner, Alfred and Emily: FINDING A JOB ON THE INTERNET, McGraw-Hill, 
  52. 1995, ISBN 0-07-024055-8, $16.95.
  53.     A very well-written and helpful book on using the Internet as an 
  54.     employment resource.  Even if you are not currently seeking a job, it is 
  55.     worth reading for background knowledge.

  57. Hafner, Katie and John Markoff: CYBERPUNK, OUTLAWS AND HACKERS ON THE 
  58. COMPUTER FRONTIER, Touchstone, 1991, ISBN 0-671-77879-X, $12.00.
  59.     Starts where HACKERS and  THE CUCKOO'S EGG (see below) leave off. A 
  60.     detailed and entertaining account of the new generation of hackers.

  62. Hargrave, Bonnie J. and Ted Dunning: BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER ACCESSORIES AND 
  63. SAVE A BUNDLE, Windcrest, 1992, ISBN 0-8306-3866-0. 
  64.     Good book about building cables, networking, & software for communications
  65.     & port control.

  67. Kidder, Tracy: THE SOUL OF A NEW MACHINE, Avon Books, 1982, 
  68. ISBN 0-380-59931-7, $3.95.
  69.     The retelling of how a group of young programmers and engineers working
  70.     against time and the odds created an advanced minicomputer at DEC. A 
  71.     gripping and enjoyable story that gives an insider's view of the 
  72.     industry.

  74. Kitsz, Dennis Bathory: THE CUSTOM TRS-80 & OTHER MYSTERIES, IJG Inc., 1982,
  75. ISBN 0-936200-02-2 [out of print].
  76.     A out-of-print love poem to an out-of-production computer.  Surprisingly
  77.     complete collection of articles, essays, data sheets, and schematics
  78.     covering hardware and software modification to the "classic" Model I 
  79.     TRS-80. Not of much practical use any more (unless you can get a hold of
  80.     a still commonly available used "Trash 80" at a flea market), but still
  81.     wonderfully educational and enjoyable to browse and read.

  83. Lafore, Robert: OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING IN TURBO C++, Waite Group Press,
  84. 1991, ISBN 1-878739-06-02, $26.95.
  85.     An easy introductory level primer for the would-be C++ programmer.  The
  86.     author claims that no previous knowledge of C is necessary.  Not quite
  87.     the case, but almost.  Very well written and mostly free of jargon.
  88.     For those wanting to learn C++, this is the first book to get. 
  89.     Excellent++.

  93.      Entertaining and educational description of the Hacker subculture and

  96. Libes, Don: OBFUSCATED C AND OTHER MYSTERIES, John Wiley & Sons, 1993, 
  97. ISBN 0-471-57805-3, $39.95 [book/disk combo].
  98.      A collection of amusing and informative source code.  Includes yearly
  99.      winners of the contest for the most confused and screwed-up C programs.
  100.      Will make you laugh, and teach as it does.

  102. Mayer, Herbert G.: ADVANCED C PROGRAMMING ON THE IBM PC, Windcrest Books,
  103. 1989, ISBN 0-8306-9363-7, $26.95.
  104.     An idea-filled book for the intermediate to advanced programmer.  Superb 
  105.     coverage of algorithms, quirks of the language, and even amusements.
  106.     Very readable and enjoyable for the author's dry sense of humor, if
  107.     nothing else. Very highly recommended.

  109. Mitchell, Ed and others: SECRETS OF THE BORLAND C++ MASTERS, Sams, 1992, ISBN

  111.     Rather expensive, but a useful reference and tutorial on both useful and 
  112.     esoteric techniques in C and C++ programming.  Recommended.

  116.      The indispensable reference for interrupts, memory map, etc.

  120.      A very nice introduction to fractal graphics, with a system for 
  121.      producting them.  Excellent explanations.  Expensive, but good.

  123. Osborne, Adam: AN INTRODUCTION TO MICROCOMPUTERS - VOL. II, SOME REAL 
  124. PRODUCTS, Osborne & Associates Inc., LC# 76-374891, 1977 [out of print].
  125.      One of the first references to CPU's and support chips, it is still
  126.      a very useful guide for data and applications involving CPU logic.

  129. House, 1994, ISBN 0-679-79073-X, $60.00 [may be discounted].
  130.      Pricey, but very worthwhile collection of UNIX info and techniques. The 
  131.      accompanying CD ROM with all the source from the book plus many GNU 
  132.      utilities is icing on the cake. Very highly recommended for UNIX / Linux 
  133.      devotees.

  137.      Brief, but fascinating explorations into the worlds of number and

  150.      Graphics imaging using C and Assembler made understandable, if not 
  151.      exactly easy.  Deciphering, displaying, and converting GIF, PCX, and
  152.      many other graphic file formats are among the topics treated.  Many,
  153.      many listings of very usable code.  Wish it came with the disk, though.

  157.      Profiles of veteran C programmers and annotated source code of
  158.      programming projects make this an enlightening and readable

  168.      Probably the best of the introductions to C.  Extensive coverage for

  173.      One of the best beginners book on the Linux (UNIX-compatible) operating 
  174.      system available. A very readable tutorial and useful reference.

  176. Welsh, Matt and others: THE LINUX BIBLE (3rd ed.), Yggdrasil Computing, 
  177. Inc., 1995, ISBN 1-883601-12-6, approx. $39.95 (with CD ROM).
  178.      The very best LINUX reference book. Actually six books plus 
  179.      documentation and FAQ's combined into a single 1600 page volume. The 
  180.      accompanying CD has all the text in the book, the LINUX manual pages, 
  181.      and even a couple of distributions. *Must have* for anyone serious about 
  182.      LINUX. If you buy only one LINUX book, get this one.

  187. Books about Microsoft Windows (c) are conspicuous by their absence in this 
  188. list. This is a *deliberate* omission. I am strongly biased against 
  189. crippled, buggy operating systems. You may *require* a GUI in order to use a 
  190. computer, just as you absolutely *need* an automatic transmission to be able 
  191. to drive your car... but expect no support or sympathy here.
